Frequently Asked Questions?
What kind of treatment does your office provide?
At Dental Arts of St. Lucie West, we offer an extremely comprehensive set of treatments and procedures customary of a dental practice. We do everything from cleanings and fillings to crowns and veneers. We recommend regular cleanings twice a year that includes a general check up to see if you need any work done or if there are any areas of concern regarding your oral health. We also provide treatment upon request of a patient so long as we deem it safe.
How often should I get a teeth cleaning?
We generally recommend getting a cleaning twice a year in order to prevent excessive plaque build up on your teeth and to identify any problems that arise in the time between cleanings.
What is a cavity?
Cavities are pits or holes that develop in the teeth as a result of bacteria, sugary drinks, or poor dental hygiene. Once a cavity forms and has eaten through the enamel, it will be necessary to get a filling in order to prevent further more damaging decay. If a cavity is left untreated, a tooth can become infected and other more drastic treatments will be needed.
What is gum disease?
Gum (periodontal) disease is an infection of the gums typically caused by poor dental hygiene and plaque and tartar buildup. If this disease progresses too far without treatment, bleeding gums, painful chewing, and tooth loss can occur. If you have gum disease, we can help you. We will examine your mouth and discuss a treatment plan with you.
Are veneers a good option for me?
Veneers are great for people with discolored or misaligned teeth. They help give a more pleasant look to your teeth by changing the way they appear in size, shape, or length. However, not everyone is fit for veneers. Those with tooth decay or gum disease are not good candidates. Also, be advised that teeth whitening treatments do not work on porcelain veneers. However, if your teeth are generally healthy and you are without gum disease, we can fit you with a set of veneers and give you the beautiful and confident smile that you desire.
Do you perform root canals?
While we do offer to place crowns as a service, our office does not do root canals. However, if we determine that you need a root canal, we will refer you to one of our trusted partners to perform the root canal. After the root canal is done, we’ll have you back in our office to finish the last steps of the treatment.
Why do I have a toothache?
Tooth pain arises when the nerves associated with a tooth become irritated. This can be due to several reasons such as infection, tooth decay, injury to the tooth, or loss of a tooth. If you experience persistent tooth pain, give us a call and we will schedule a consultation to determine the cause of the pain and create a treatment plan to eliminate the pain.
Who is at risk for gum disease?
Generally, those who smoke, people with diabetes, girls and women going through hormonal changes, and people with certain illnesses are at a greater risk for acquiring gum disease.
What is a filling?
Fillings serve to fill cavities in teeth and prevent further decay and potential infection. Fillings are often tooth-colored and not noticeable once placed. When you come into our office, our team will examine your teeth to determine if you have any cavities that need to be filled. If so, we will explain the treatment procedures and pricing.

If you choose to leave your contact information in the form on our site, we will contact you as soon as we can by phone or email to address any questions you have or schedule an appointment for you.
Is having a tooth extracted painful?
While you can expect to have some pain and swelling after the procedure, tooth extractions themselves should not be painful due to the fact that we use anesthetics to numb the area completely prior to extracting the tooth. You can trust us to provide you with a pain-free extraction as we make you as comfortable as possible during the procedure.
Do I need to take my dentures out at night?
While you can sleep in your dentures, we advise that take them out every night to give your gums and bone a chance to relax. You should never go 24 hours without properly cleaning your dentures.
Do I still need dentures if I’m not missing all of my teeth?
If you still have teeth left in your upper or lower jaw, we can fit you with a set of partial dentures that will fill the gaps of the missing teeth.
